In a heartfelt initiative to support the educational journey of disadvantaged children, ABA Bank has partnered with the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) to provide a crucial transportation mean for the students in the Steung Meanchey district of Phnom Penh. This collaboration highlights the powerful impact of corporate social responsibility on community development.

The Steung Meanchey landfill was once one of the largest garbage dumps, marked by extreme poverty and environmental toxicity. CCF then lifted the community out of poverty and into a new era of hope and possibility through the provision of education.

For children living in this area, accessing education was fraught with challenges, one of them due to inadequate transportation. ABA and CCF decided to tackle this challenge.

A New Bus for a Brighter Future

In 2023, ABA donated $20,000, covering 82% of the total cost of a new school bus. This contribution has become a lifeline for the children of Steung Meanchey, allowing them to reach their dreams through education. The new bus, with its spacious interior and efficient cooling system, symbolizes hope and a brighter future for the students.

The new bus has improved the daily lives of the students. It transports 40 students per run, making four runs daily, and serves 160 children who now eagerly anticipate their journey to public school. Beyond the daily school runs, the bus also serves as a vital link for patient transport to hospitals, home visits, and leadership camps, ensuring the children’s well-being and development.

Transformative Impact

Pheary Ann, a 13-year-old student at The Rice Academy (TRA), shared her gratitude: “I am very grateful for the new bus donated by ABA. This bus is bigger, smells better, and feels cooler. I can go to school on time”, she continued with “I want to thank ABA for this donation.”

Previously, transportation was a major complication for her, but the new bus ensures she can attend school on time in a comfortable and safe environment.

“This ABA-funded bus helps reduce our maintenance and repair fees burden,” comments Sinith Chea, fleet coordinator at CCF. “It provides a more comfortable and safe mode of transportation and represents a significant step forward in supporting CCF's beneficiaries,” he added.

A Model for Change

The partnership between ABA Bank and CCF is a shining example of corporate social responsibility and community collaboration. By addressing the critical need for reliable transportation, this initiative has significantly improved educational access and the quality of life for impoverished children in the Steung Meanchey district. It demonstrates the powerful impact of well-funded, targeted projects on community development and poverty reduction.

As a testament to its ongoing support towards CCF and the future of many Cambodian children, ABA Bank contributed another $60,000 for three years to CCF's Primary Education Program in September 2024. This project ensures that as many young students receive full-time primary education as possible.

Marking its way forward, ABA remains committed to supporting educational programs through CCF, and we are eager to build on this success and explore further initiatives that benefit the children, their well-being, and their overall future.
