On 23 April 2020, ABA Bank brought emergency food supplies to 100 families affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The families live in Prek Anchagn community in Trapang Anchagn Village on the outskirts of Phnom Penh and are mainly occupied in the garment and construction sectors, which experienced a significant impact of the economic slowdown.

Initiated under COVID-19 Disaster Relief Project of CBN Cambodia, a registered international non-profit organization, ABA Bank’s donation contributes to supporting the low-income families who lost their primary source of income due to temporary closure of their workplaces or optimization of workforces. Through this initiative, each family received the urgent food aid of rice, canned fish, and noodles. Each family also received a liquid handwash canister to improve their general hygiene and well-being.

Ven Vichetphal, Branch Manager of Cham Chao branch commented, “COVID-19 outbreak affects everyone in one way or another. Its effects on some are worse than others, and it is our responsibility to support those who are in need. Since most of Prek Anchagn residents work at garment factories and construction sites, many suffered from the loss of income during this dreadful pandemic.”

“By participating in this project, we at ABA wanted to make a real contribution to the local community during this temporary period of hardships, “he added.

CBN Cambodia has delivered humanitarian aids in various provinces since 1998. They have been working with the Prek Anchagn community in the last two years by providing supports to underprivileged families and running a school for 40 children. COVID-19 Disaster Relief Project is the spontaneous reaction after witnessing the perils that the pandemic brought to the livelihoods of the villagers there.

Country Director of CBN Cambodia, Mr. Oum Nhean Piseth said, “On behalf of CBN Cambodia, I express my deepest thanks to ABA Bank for the dedication and contribution to the families who are suffering from the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. This is a gesture of love and support of Cambodian families in this difficult time, and we believe that things will return to normal soon.”
